Before Fitting Your Cover
-
Remove, fold away, or cover any sharp or fragile objects (such as aerials, guttering, ladders, etc.) on the exterior of your caravan to avoid damage to them and the cover.
-
Close all roof lights, windows, and vents.
-
Ensure the handbrake is applied and the corner jacks are down.
-
Turn off heaters and other appliances.
-
Preferably, fit the cover when the caravan exterior is dry (not essential).
-
Ensure the caravan exterior is clean. Dust and dirt trapped under the cover can cause scratches in windy conditions.
-
Carefully check the condition of your cover, especially the hook & strap assemblies. Do not use if worn or damaged.
Fitting Your Cover
Safety Warning: Two people are required. Use stepladders or a stable platform carefully. Do not attempt to fit the cover while standing on the ladder — use it only to assist from the ground. Always follow the ladder/platform manufacturer’s safety instructions.
-
Open out the cover and pass it over the roof, starting at the front and working towards the rear. Carefully lift it over roof lights and protrusions.
-
Adjust the cover’s position until it sits evenly.
-
Attach the adjustable straps to suitable fixing points on the caravan (e.g., maneuvering handles, wheels, chassis).
-
Do NOT attach hooks to loose objects or trim.
-
Ensure the cover hem lies flat against the caravan sides to reduce the risk of wind lifting it.
-
For maximum security, loop the strap around an object and attach the hook back onto the strap itself.
-
Tension the straps securely, but do not over-tighten.
-
Use the sewn-on protective covers behind each buckle:
-
After tightening, fasten the protective cover around the buckle to protect paintwork.
-
Tuck in any loose strap ends to prevent them flapping in the wind.
-
Re-check that all hooks are properly secured.
Care of Your Cover
-
Allow the cover to dry completely before storing in the provided bag.
-
Brush or shake off any loose dirt before storage or reuse.
-
Do NOT machine wash or tumble dry. Clean with a soft sponge and warm water only. Do NOT use detergents.
-
Do NOT expose the cover to sparks, flames, or other ignition sources.
Do I really need a cover for my caravan or motorhome?
If you're storing your vehicle for any extended period, especially over winter, a cover is one of the simplest ways to protect your investment. It shields against:
- Weather damage
- Grit, sap, and bird mess
- UV damage that fades paint and weakens seals
- Moisture buildup that leads to damp and mildew
Without a cover, your caravan or motorhome is exposed to the elements, even when parked.
Why is breathability so important?
Breathable covers allow moisture and condensation to escape, preventing damp, mould, and corrosion. Maypole’s 4-ply polypropylene covers are designed to:
- Let air circulate naturally
- Avoid trapped moisture under the cover
- Protect paintwork and seals from long term damage
Whether you own a caravan, campervan, or motorhome, breathability is non-negotiable for safe storage.
Will a cover scratch my paintwork or cause damage?
Not if it’s made from the right materials and fitted correctly. Look for:
- Soft, non-abrasive backing
- Elasticated hems and secure straps
- Ensure you clean surfaces and padded sharp edges before fitting
Maypole’s covers are engineered to protect, not harm.
What type of cover should I choose?
- Full Covers: Best for complete off-season protection
- Roof Only Covers Lightweight and ideal for shielding the most exposed area
- Towing Covers: Protect the front during transit (not suitable for storage)
Are these covers suitable for motorhomes and campervans too?
Yes. Maypole offer caravan, motorhome, VW & Ducato campers, and horsebox covers, with universal sizing options and zippered door access.
How do I fit the cover properly?
- Choose a dry, calm day
- Start from the roof and work down
- Use straps and elasticated hems for a snug fit
- Pad sharp fittings like aerials or ladders
- Use built-in zips for door access
Can I tow my caravan with a full winter cover?
No, never tow with a full storage cover. Use the dedicated Maypole Towing Cover for safe transit.
