Why Choose the Maypole Horsebox Trailer & Hitch Cover?
Protect your horsebox during storage with the Maypole Horsebox Trailer & Hitch Cover, made from breathable 4 ply non woven polypropylene that is UV stable and highly water resistant. The soft, non abrasive inner helps to safeguard paintwork while the breathable construction supports moisture evaporation to reduce condensation and mildew.
A tailored elasticated hem stretches neatly across trailers from 3.3 m to 3.7 m, while two nylon side straps and extra strong double stitched seams secure the cover in place. Two zip openings make fitting easier and give access to the front loading ramp and groom’s door on either side without removing the cover. A colour co-ordinated hitch cover and a storage bag are included for a smart finish and tidy packing when not in use.
Important
-
Do NOT attempt to fit the cover in windy conditions.
-
Do NOT attempt to tow your horse box with the cover fitted.
-
When opening and closing a zip, always ensure the cover surrounding it is straight and not too tight.
-
Do NOT over-tension straps as this may damage your cover.
-
This cover has no facility for latching open doors. To prevent injury or damage, only use front loading ramps, top doors or groom’s doors if they are correctly secured as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
-
The cover must be completely removed if accessing the rear loading ramp.
Before Fitting Your Cover
-
Remove, fold away or cover any sharp or fragile objects on the exterior of your horse box (e.g. aerials, mirrors, ladders) to avoid damage to both them and the cover.
-
Close and secure all windows and doors.
-
Ensure that:
-
The handbrake is applied.
-
Wheels are chocked.
-
The horse box is on flat, stable ground to prevent movement during fitting.
-
It is preferable (but not essential) that the exterior is dry before fitting the cover.
Fitting Your Cover
Warning: Two people and the careful use of stepladders or a stable platform will be required. The cover is large, heavy, and must be passed carefully over all sections of the horse box.
If using stepladders or a platform, follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions.
Do not attempt to fit the cover from the ladder – only use the ladder to assist people on the ground.
-
Open out the cover. The front section is clearly identified with a “FRONT” label.
-
Unzip the two front door openings.
-
Starting from the rear and working towards the front, lift the cover carefully over the roof and all protruding objects.
-
Adjust the cover’s position until an even fit all over is achieved.
-
Close the zips carefully and fasten the Velcro tabs.
-
Pass the elasticated cord under the drawbar.
-
Secure the sides of the cover with the two straps provided:
a. Attach one end of each strap to a buckle and pass the strap under your horse box.
b. Secure the other end to the corresponding buckle on the opposite side.
c. Tighten each strap as required.
-
Fit the hitch cover and secure it with the straps and buckles provided.
Care of Your Cover
-
Allow the cover to dry completely before storing it in the bag provided.
-
Do NOT machine wash or tumble dry.
-
Do NOT expose this cover to sparks, flames, or other sources of ignition.
Do I really need a cover for my caravan or motorhome?
If you're storing your vehicle for any extended period, especially over winter, a cover is one of the simplest ways to protect your investment. It shields against:
- Weather damage
- Grit, sap, and bird mess
- UV damage that fades paint and weakens seals
- Moisture buildup that leads to damp and mildew
Without a cover, your caravan or motorhome is exposed to the elements, even when parked.
Why is breathability so important?
Breathable covers allow moisture and condensation to escape, preventing damp, mould, and corrosion. Maypole’s 4-ply polypropylene covers are designed to:
- Let air circulate naturally
- Avoid trapped moisture under the cover
- Protect paintwork and seals from long term damage
Whether you own a caravan, campervan, or motorhome, breathability is non-negotiable for safe storage.
Will a cover scratch my paintwork or cause damage?
Not if it’s made from the right materials and fitted correctly. Look for:
- Soft, non-abrasive backing
- Elasticated hems and secure straps
- Ensure you clean surfaces and padded sharp edges before fitting
Maypole’s covers are engineered to protect, not harm.
What type of cover should I choose?
- Full Covers: Best for complete off-season protection
- Roof Only Covers Lightweight and ideal for shielding the most exposed area
- Towing Covers: Protect the front during transit (not suitable for storage)
Are these covers suitable for motorhomes and campervans too?
Yes. Maypole offer caravan, motorhome, VW & Ducato campers, and horsebox covers, with universal sizing options and zippered door access.
How do I fit the cover properly?
- Choose a dry, calm day
- Start from the roof and work down
- Use straps and elasticated hems for a snug fit
- Pad sharp fittings like aerials or ladders
- Use built-in zips for door access
Can I tow my caravan with a full winter cover?
No, never tow with a full storage cover. Use the dedicated Maypole Towing Cover for safe transit.
